Correlation between BOD5 and COD – biodegradability indicator of wastewater

چکیده

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) and Chemical (COD) are the most commonly parameters for characterization of organic matter content water. Correlation between BOD5 COD different types water can provide relevant information about nature pollution, its level biodegradability. This correlation could also be used to assess quality effluent after treatment processes, improve performance wastewater plants (WWTPs) and/or monitor river into which discharged. The objective this study was degree biodegradability (influents effluents 3 important municipal WWTPs Romania, untreated discharged by economic units from Bucharest; 5 hospitals surface - natural receptors plants), based on ratios BOD5/COD. BOD5/COD ratio (also called Biodegradability Index) varied depending type investigated should periodically rechecked due variations in climatic conditions, industrial receptors, supply characteristics, availability. Index enable evaluation pollution wastewater, providing possibility estimation regarding biological treatability influent WWTP.

Biodegradability of wastewater--a method for COD-fractionation.

Characterization of wastewater for simulation of in-sewer transformations can be carried out by interpretation of oxygen uptake rate measurements in combination with a conceptual model of the microbial transformations involved. This interpretation can be done by iterative procedures by solving the differential equations constituting the model or by the application of a more "manual" method--the...

Simultaneous Determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5) in Wastewater by Near-Infrared Spectrometry

To rapidly determine the pollution extent of wastewater, the calibration models were established for determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand and Biological Oxygen Demand in wastewater by partial least squares and near infrared spectrometry of 120 samples. Spectral data preprocessing and outliers’ diagnosis were also discussed. Correlation coefficients of the models were 0.9542 and 0.9652, and t...

Determination of a Statistical Model to Predict COD and TKN from the BOD5 and NH4+ Results

Introduction: The development of an appropriate model for the quality control of an industrial wastewater treatment system can save the time as well as the cost. This study was performed to determine an appropriate model in order to predict the COD and TKN parameters by BOD5 and NH4+ in the Meybod industrial estate wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).  Materials and Methods: This descriptiv...

Further steps in the standardization of BOD5/COD ratio as a biological stability index for MSW.

In recent decades the definition of standard test methodologies suitable for use in assessing the biological stability of solid waste has become increasingly imperative. To meet this requirement, the BOD5/COD ratio, measured on waste eluate, has been proposed by Cossu et al. (2012) as a more appropriate parameter than the traditional respirometric indices and biogas production measured directly...

Cavitationally induced biodegradability enhancement of a distillery wastewater.

Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) was evaluated as a pretreatment option for the complex/recalcitrant biomethanated distillery wastewater (B-DWW). The effect of various process parameters such as inlet pressure, dilution and reaction time on reduction of COD/TOC and enhancement of biodegradability index (BI:BOD(5):COD ratio) of the B-DWW was studied with an aim to maximize the biodegradability index...
